I’m pretty sure that many of us have been in such situation where after you’ve decided to change your lifestyle, you hear this one song or this particular type of music and it takes you all the way back to your past. It gives you the urge to go clubbing again or perhaps you get really depressed when you’re reminded of past disappointments and rejections.
This has happened to me so many times. However, yesterday, as I was out doing some shopping, I walked into a store where they were playing some old school rub-a-dub. Oh yes, it brought me all the way back to my high school years. Yet one thing I found very interesting was that I did not feel a thing. Normally when I listen to certain types of music, I get very depressed, sad, and bitter. It would take me back to all the hurt I went through, the rejections, and past failures. But this time I felt nothing, that’s right, NOTHING. I was like “hey, I’m free!” I quickly realized that I was free from what was holding me down for so long. Free from hurt; free from bitterness; free from past anger. All this happened the moment I decided that I was not going to let my past failures, mistakes, and disappointments rule over my life. It was a decision that only I could have made, no one could have done it for me.
Often times we want to be set free from our past but we don’t want to do anything about it ourselves, we want someone else to do it for us. We end up going to some church, searching for someone to set us free from the things that are holding us down.
My dear friend let me tell you something, “whom the Son sets free, is free indeed.” You have to take your own stand, no one can take it for you. You have to believe that you’re free and walk in your freedom. You don’t have to go to a church (the building) in order for God to set you free. Many of us walk in bondages because we lack knowledge and understanding of the Word of God. We know nothing about the promises of God. We need to stop depending on what people can do for us and start trusting in what God is doing in us. Believe in who He says you are. “Whom the Son sets free, is free indeed” (John 8:36). Your past got nothing on you!
